Abstract

The article is based on a literature review and aims to identify the elements that facilitate the consolidation of a knowledge society and, at the same time, influence the performance of any organization. It had been applied a content analysis to the most relevant books and articles that had appeared in the knowledge management domain until July 2011.

This conceptual paper presents the four pillars of the knowledge society – education, research, development and innovation – and reflects the fact that the SECI model may be applied on the national level. In other words, socialization is substituted by education, externalization by research, combination by development and internalization by innovation.
