Abstract

In the March 1837 monthly part of Pickwick Papers, Dickens had Tony Weller make fun of the makers of Warren’s Blacking and Rowland’s Macassar Oil, two of the leading consumer products of the age. This paper attempts to explain why Dickens had Weller do so.
