Abstract

The NTIA’s broadband mapping initiative, implementing the goals of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Broadband Data Improvement Act (BDIA), provides information about broadband Internet services in the United States at an unprecedented level of detail. Whereas the first release has some weaknesses, this public data base invites new analyses of gaps in broadband service at the census block group level, areas that average about 1,500 persons. This paper examines geographic variations in broadband service access, quality, and competition at the census block group level in relationship to 2010 Census estimates.
