Abstract

Background: Centralized online reputation systems take advantages of Internet technologies to help users make decisions. From the system structure perspective, all reputation systems have five underlying components: input, processing, output, feedback loop and storage.

Aim: Research in this area to date has focused on evaluating the effectiveness of the input and processing components. This paper concentrates on the output component, which disseminates and presents the collected and aggregated reputation information.

Method: The paper proposes an evaluation metric, which is built from the information quality (IQ) perspective. Eight measurements have been defined based on four relevant IQ dimensions, accessibility, timeliness, interpretability and completeness. Then the paper uses the metric to evaluate 15 commercial systems.

Results: The results show there are four main problems with current reputation systems: 1) a lack of dissemination methods; 2) weak review filtering functions; 3) a lack of adequate information on reviewers and feedback and 4) a deficiency of multidimensional ratings.

Keywords: Reputation Systems, Product Review, Information Dissemination, E-commerce, Feedback Systems
