Abstract

Participation that is compulsory or supported by auto-enrollment; a high default savings rate with auto-escalation, and the employer contribution set to provide benefits commensurate with defined benefit (DB) plans; customized target-date glide paths, with mid-course corrections, for each participant, and scale to reduce investment and administrative fees; reporting that focuses on post-retirement income; and a three-pronged decumulation portfolio — put these together and defined contribution (DC) plans can do an excellent job for retirement. Or, for a completely different approach, copy the Dutch collective DC system.
