Abstract

This chapter will consider and add to the research on corporate governance in New Zealand listed companies. There is little evidence of investigation over the past ten years of the issue of the levels of common ownership and control in large listed companies in New Zealand. We will use statistical methods similar to those used in prior studies to derive a range of conclusions on control, board/shareholder membership, foreign investment and ownership of the top 50 listed companies on the NZX. Regular commentary will be introduced throughout the chapter through the use of current NZX policies and the NZ Securities Commission standards, which may have influence on the corporate governance of these entities.
