Abstract

I seek to demonstrate in the paper that Conan Doyle's real-life model for the photographer of Charles Augustus Milverton's killer in the Sherlock Holmes story, "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton," was Herbert Rose Barraud.

I rely in particular on the location of Barraud's studio, the fact that he was a leading photographer of the celebrities and beauties of the day and that among the celebrities he photographed was Conan Doyle himself.

I also discuss in the paper Holmes's potential criminality in relation to Milverton, concentrating on the crimes of burglary, misprision of felony and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Keywords: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes, Herbert Rose Barraud, real-life models for fictional characters, nineteenth century London photographers
