Abstract
This is a chapter in a book collection devoted to law, religion and ‘resonableness’. The interactions between literal neighbours are generally regulated by the private law of nuisance. Some of the key notions in that area of law – accommodation, equilibrium, character of the neighbourhood – can be transplanted to the context of interpersonal and intercommunal relations in the mixed reality of life in diverse societies. This article weaves together examples of conflict between, and cohabitation of, religious and non-religious neighbours in the Montreal neighbourhood of Outremont, with critical analysis of ongoing discussions and constructions of religious identity, gender equality and law.
