Crecimiento Económico de Largo Plazo en Antioquia, Colombia: Estimación del PIB, 1800-1913 (Long Term Economic Growth in Antioquia, Colombia: GDP Estimates, 1800-1913)

Abstract

Este trabajo realiza el primer análisis cuantitativo detallado del nivel de actividad económica de Antioquia para el siglo XIX y la primera parte del XX. A partir de los datos existentes para la economía colombiana, se reconstruye la que es, además, una de las primeras series de PIB regional en Latinoamérica para el periodo. Se encuentra que en Antioquia, ya a principios del siglo XIX, se disfrutaba de ingresos per cápita superiores a los del promedio colombiano. Por otra parte, se encontraron períodos de auge económico entre 1800 y 1840, 1860 y 1880, y 1905 y 1913, siendo este último el más pronunciado. Así, se estaría dando una respuesta a la larga discusión sobre el inicio del despegue económico antioqueño. El trabajo permite comprender el crecimiento económico de Antioquia sin necesidad de recurrir a argumentos institucionales o culturales.

This paper provides the first detailed quantitative analysis of the economic activity of Antioquia for the nineteenth century and early twentieth. From the existing data for the Colombian economy, it is reconstructed one of the first series of regional GDP in Latin America for the period. We find that Antioquia, in the early nineteenth century, enjoyed of higher per capita incomes than the average of Colombia. Moreover, we found periods of economic boom between 1800 and 1840, 1860 and 1880, and 1905 and 1913, the latter being more pronounced. Thus, the paper answers the long discussion about the economic takeoff of Antioquia. It is provided insights into the economic growth of Antioquia without need for institutional or cultural arguments.
