Abstract

The relaxation of the ban on information on prescription-only medicines is a key part of the Euro-pean Commission‘s "pharmaceutical package". The Commission presents this measure as an in-strument to empower patients. It takes the view that information on medicines by pharmaceutical companies is a decisive factor for the informed decision-making of patients and their rational use of medicines. However, this argument does not take into account that patients are subject to a multitude of rationality deficits when dealing with information. An increase of information will therefore only lead to improved decision-making if the information concerned is of a high quality. This cannot be ensured if it is provided by pharmaceutical companies.
