Abstract

An impeachment is a mandatory prerequisite for the removal of an elected public official in most countries of the world including Nigeria. The process of impeachment of elected public officers under the 1999 Nigerian constitution has several loopholes which leave the system open to manipulation and abuse. This has been established in this paper through the examination of key impeachment cases that have occurred in Nigeria. The cases examined reveal the role and relevance of the judiciary in the sustenance of democracy and rule of law.
