Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the educational theory described in J.J. Rousseau's Emile. It asks what we stand to learn, 251 years later, from that theory, concluding that while Rousseau's ideas may not be new to us now, they do serve as a useful reminder of the educational ideals we frequently neglect.

Keywords: Rousseau, Emile, active learning, experiential learning
