Abstract

The United States’ service academies train cadets and midshipmen to serve as in extremis leaders in the military, each using a liberal arts education as the foundation of their educational and training program. This paper takes the position that a liberal arts education is a strong base for leader development at these academies. By examining the nature of a liberal arts education, differences between leadership and management, and the role of the liberal arts in authentic leader development, this paper shows that the liberal arts make a solid foundation for in extremis leaders.
