Abstract
This report seeks to capture discussions within the ‘social and ethical’ breakout group at the Internet of Things R&D Roadmapping Workshop, Loughborough University, 11-12 July 2012. It was written to inform the organizers and support the drafting of the summary of the workshop. The roadmapping workshop was aimed at informing the development of research and development programmes as well as commercially oriented initiatives around the IoTs. This particular breakout group focused on identifying research that would be of value to understanding the social, legal, and ethical factors shaping the IoT and its implications for individuals, organizations and society at large in the UK.
A Special Internet Group (SIG) of the UK’s Technology Strategy Board (TSB) that was focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) organized the workshop. It was conducted in collaboration with the UK’s Research Councils (RCUK), given a focus on developing a multi-disciplinary understanding of the IoT and the kinds of research that should be supported by each of the respective research councils. Given the potential of innovations around the IoT to engage all the disciplines, it is likely to have central relevance to RCUK digital economy programs, and to the UK’s Connected Digital Economy Catapult (CDEc) that would be supported by TSB and foster further research of importance to the research councils.
