Abstract

This article describes labor and capital dynamics in the Uruguayan manufacturing sector between 1982 and 1995. Using microdata from the Manufacturing Survey conducted by National Institute of Statistics, it estimates the rates of creation, destruction, net creation and reallocation of production factors. The three main conclusions are: i) the coexistence of substantial rates of creation and destruction; ii) in the nineties, the destruction rates were higher than the creation rates implying negative net growth rates, and iii) net creation is higher for capital than for labor, which points to a technological change in favor of the use of capital. These three traits were found for different disaggregation of establishments by sector of activity, size, age of the firm, production level, unionization level and sector concentration.
