In this contribution, I will first try to indicate, among the variety of terms and legal concepts, what might be considered a true or real foundation, to be distinguished form its unnatural brothers and sisters. Since foundations cannot engage in commercial activities, one should limit the meaning of the term trust in this contribution to not include commercial trusts. Then three tendencies or evolutions will be briefly captured: personification, privatization and flexibility.
