Abstract

This paper, through an evidence based synthesis, explores the civility and incivility literature to create a model to explain civil and uncivil behavior in the workplace. Workplace incivility was first defined by Andersson and Pearson (1999) as a less intense form of deviant behavior with ambiguous intent to harm, whereas civility is defined as an active engagement in creating, protecting, and participating in a community (Paveia, 2007). The civility and incivility model was created using the social ecology and symbolic interactionism theories as a framework to understand the moderators and effects. Incivility is linked to negative personal and organizational effect including employee turnover and a decrease in the employee’s physical and psychological health. Civility results in increased productivity and job satisfaction among other positive personal and organizational effects. The model will help leaders understand and address incivility while instilling civil environments in their business work units.
