This contribution reviews the extent of science teachers’ awareness of some selected innovative teaching strategies and their application at secondary school level in Benue State, Nigeria. The extent to which the mean utilization differs across teachers’ age, experience and professional background on subject basis was also determined. A sample of one hundred and sixty teachers from a teacher population size of 986 responded to 19 selected teaching strategies used as questionnaire items in this study. The study found that the level of teacher awareness of innovative strategies was high but that only a few of the strategies were being effectively utilized by the teachers. Recommendations were made based on the findings, which include effective teaching of application techniques of the various innovative strategies to student teachers in training and organizing workshops on the effective use of these strategies to science teachers by experts across the state.
