Abstract

Drawing upon interviews conducted on young white South Africans who have untaken a Working Holiday to the United Kingdom this article explores how various internet technologies have facilitated a shift in the consideration of 'home'. For these migrants the consideration of home through technology has resulted in South Africa emerging as an imaginary place constituted by various values, expectations and behaviours. Subsequently this place has become a vital component of their identity, which is ironic considering that many of these migrants undertook the migrancy in order to escape the South African component of their identity. Such reversions are important to note, particularly in a context where there is reflection upon what constitutes the authentic national subject in South Africa.
