Abstract

A conceptual analysis of "sexual activity" which considers the larger class "sexual activity" and the subset "having sex." The logical relationships between sexual activity, on the one hand, and other sexual concepts, on the other hand (desire, pleasure, satisfaction, sensations, arousal) are analytically explored. The goal of the investigation is to arrive at viable and plausible definitions of 'sexual activity' and 'having sex' that will be useful in the law, in demographic studies of sexual behavior, and the philosophical study of derivative sexual concepts (e.g., masturbation, sexual orientation, oral sex, homosexuality, etc.). Clinton and Lewinsky are not ignored.

Keywords: sexual activity, having sex, desire, satisfaction, pleasure, perversion, reproduction and procreation, STDs, Edward Laumann, William Clinton, Monica Lewinsky
