Abstract

An historical survey and analytic study of the various meanings of a "sexually complete" sexual act, covering Western religious conceptions that focus on ejaculation and fertilization as well as contemporary psychological and psychiatric conceptions that emphasize interpersonal, mutual awareness and arousal. It is also discussed to what extent completeness is a neutral and objective notion, as opposed to being fraught with normative implications.

Keywords: incompleteness, ejaculation, fertilization, resolution, psychological mutuality, perversion, paraphilia, procreation, DSM, Thomas Nagel, Thomas Aquinas
