Abstract

After a brief overview of current patent citation practice, related terms are introduced and defined. Next, two concise workflows are examined: an empirical study of Faurecia, one of the world’s leading automobile component providers, is carried out and two patent webs are obtained, which depict Faurecia’s patenting strategy in the automobile seat rail technology field. From the two resulting patent maps, improvements are observed after employing extended family based citation as a tool. Future perspectives are also summarized for further development of this family based citation analysis methodology, so that better R&D and/or design around decisions can be made by innovators.

Keywords: patent landscape, patent family, citation, technology map, patent map
