Abstract

English Abstract: The economic impact of cooperatives is usually underestimated and not completely understood by both economists and media. This is also true for cooperatives working in the agricultural sector. In fact, none of the observers commenting on the recent positive performance of the Italian agricultural sector, which is contributing to the surplus of the Italian balance of payments, has made reference the role played by cooperatives and consortia of farmers. The paper aim is to contribute to filling this research gap by investigating the role played by agricultural cooperatives in the wine production. In particular, the paper analyses the characteristics, the evolution and performances of wine cooperatives. Comparative analyses with shareholders companies are conducted based on data availability.
