The growth of tourism in the world, specifically in Peru, has turned tourism into a productive emerging activity of great potential for development and exploitation. Tourism is an economical activity which generates foreign exchange and at the same time promotes employment opportunities for the people. This paper is aimed at determining whether there is enough educational offer in reference to tourism in universities, technical institutes, and the labor market itself. The research was conducted in two fronts, the first one was to gather secondary information, aimed at reviewing comprehensive literature, coming to find out there was little research on the subject in Peru, and the second front, an exploratory qualitative research, where semi-structured interviews were conducted on 20 experts from the government, private and academic sectors. So as to analyze in-depth these interviews, by using the deconstructionist method, the content analysis was used in order to get the interpretation of the discourse.
The conclusion was that there is, in fact, a gap between the higher education in tourism and the labor market needs in the tourism industry in the country.
