Abstract

There is a global trend towards same-sex marriage. However, Australia is not yet part of this movement. This article analyses the current options available to same-sex couples from the relationship recognition menu. In the process it embarks upon an examination of the arguments for and against legalising same-sex marriage in Australia and considers whether it is fitting to enact other relationship recognition measures, such as registration and ceremonial civil unions. It also discusses whether ceremonial civil unions are an appropriate interim step on the path to full marriage equality.
