Abstract

The paper traces the history of the private sector in China from its rise to prominence in the 19th century to its near death experience under Mao, and its re-emergence in the reform era in which it is forced to co-exist and compete with Party controlled entities in ways that defy conventional definitions and the assumed distinctions between state owned enterprise and the private sector.
