Abstract
Climate change policy analysis has often focused on global issues, with little attention given to national level debates, particularly those in developing countries. In order to achieve the effective implementation of climate change mitigation policies, such as REDD, it is very important to take into account the issues raised in the local context rather than tending to refer to broad policy recommendations about what should be done. This paper seeks to analyze the sociocultural aspects of the implementation of REDD policy in Indonesia. Through literature review of several studies and reports of the REDD program in Indonesia, this paper will present a socio-cultural problem that should be of concern to REDD and Western-originated solutions of climate change that aim to achieve effective mitigation of climate change globally as well as open up opportunity for improvement in forest governance and people’s livelihood.
