Abstract
This concept paper builds on the pioneering work of Markusen and Gadwa in creative placemaking by providing a framework for evaluating work in this field. We propose that there are five orientations that should drive the work of creative placemakers: enhancing social equity and other measures of quality of life, increasing economic opportunity, building a healthier climate for individual creativity and collective expression, building on existing assets and developing strategies that strengthen and promote the distinct qualities of the place. This paper provides a framework for engaging arts and culture in community and economic development in ways that minimize the negative effects of gentrification and cultural change in communities.
