Abstract

New biotechnology firms undergo relative rapid progression from exploration to exploitation orientations. The Cambridge Antibody Technology case provides evidence of the organic growth of dynamic capabilities in a successful biotechnology firm that had reached global standing before its acquisition by a major global pharmaceutical firm. CAT progressively evolved the full spectrum of drug discovery and development capabilities in a relatively short period. This study elaborates an analytical framework connecting various levels of capability development. The resulting analysis contributes to our better understanding of the micro-dynamics of the organic growth of dynamic capabilities.
