Abstract

Venture capital investment throughout the United States in general and the southeast in particular has grown dramatically in recent years, becoming an integral part of our economy. It has helped create such companies as Apple Computer, Intel, Federal Express, Digital Equipment, and Microsoft (Sahlman 1990). Pension funds, bank holding companies, insurance companies, investment banks, and non-financial institutions all invest venture capital in order to pursue high returns and diversify investment risks.
