Abstract

In July 1999, the Harvard Business School and the Journal of Financial Economics hosted a two day conference on complementary research methodologies, focusing in particular on the role of clinical research. This piece is the introductory remarks to that volume. It defines clinical research, discusses, documents the extent to which the profession publishes this type of work, and discusses the different roles for clinical research in advancing knowledge in finance. The conference volume will be published in early 2001 by the JFE, but until then, the papers can be accessed at the JFE website: http://www.jfe.rochester.edu/jfe601.htm. This issue of FEN Educator provides abstracts for three papers from the conference which have been used in the classroom.
