Abstract

In this document, we describe the concept and use of KnowledgeMap, an interactive visualization and classification tool for exploring communities of research in a scientific discipline. We define an aggregated measure of association between documents, based on their text, their references, and how they are cited by other documents. This aggregated measure is then used to develop a document classification algorithm and a web-based interactive visualization tool. We demonstrate the application of the algorithm and the tool for the Information Systems (IS) discipline by analyzing all publications in top IS journals during the last ten years. The KnowledgeMap tool will benefit IS researchers and practitioners alike by providing a holistic view of the field, identifying active and emergent areas of research, and facilitating the process of finding relevant publications in top IS journals.
