Abstract

This chapter examines the law on free expression in Northern Ireland, as protected under domestic law and the European Convention on Human Rights. It covers a range of laws that regulate or restrict free expression including specific criminal offences, the civil law on defamation, privacy rights, media regulation, contempt of court, political expression and official secrets legislation.
