This article focuses on the goals of teaching English: effective communication in English. It aims to explain methods and approaches for effective teaching. It further examines ways of teaching the learners how to learn effectively. By means of published literature, this article discusses how the concepts of teacher talking, motivation, practical use of the language, and individual interest might help in achieving the goals for teaching English. Teachers should try to reduce excessive talking in the class and motivate the learners to communicate in the foreign language. This article ends with a recommendation that the communicative approach is effective to help the learners in acquiring the second language, and therefore, should be maximized.
