Concettualizzazioni E Rappresentazioni Dell'Area Urbana Di Milano (Conceptualisations and Representations of Milan Urban Area)

Abstract

Italian Abstract: L'istituzione delle Città metropolitane risolleva il tema dell'identificazione delle “figure urbane” sviluppatesi in Italia da cinquant'anni a questa parte. A partire da una rassegna della letteratura degli ultimi tre decenni, l'articolo presenta cinque rappresentazioni dell'area urbana di Milano e le riconduce a due distinti paradigmi scientifici: uno denominato “funzionale”, basato sulla misurazione dell’interdipendenza tra località, e uno denominato “spaziale”, basato sull'analisi delle morfologie insediative. Il confronto tra queste rappresentazioni permette di riscontrare che alcune agglomerazioni urbane esterne al capoluogo sono riconosciute da entrambi i paradigmi, e che i limiti amministrativi provinciali non corrispondono a nessuna delle letture analitiche del territorio. Infine, si tenta di corroborare l'ipotesi che i diversi approcci siano riducibili a un quadro teoretico unitario.

English Abstract: The institution of metropolitan authorities (“Città metropolitane”) in Italy raises again the theme of identifying the “urban entities” that have been developing for fifty years now. Starting from a literature review of the last three decades, the paper presents five different representations of Milan urban area and ascribe them to two distinct scientific paradigms: one named “functional”, based on the measurement of interdependence between places, and one named “spatial”, based on the analysis of urban settlements. The comparison among these representations allows to find that some urban agglomerations outside the core area are recognised by both paradigms, and that provincial (NUTS-3) administrative borders do not match with any of the analytical territorial interpretations. Finally, I try to corroborate the hypothesis that the different approaches are reducible to a single theoretical framework.
