Documents from the archives of America's Cold War antagonists are becoming increasingly available, but the project of using those materials to understand the nature of power within those states has only just begun. This paper proposes that a scientific realist understanding approach to questions like contingency, generalizability, and falsifiability provides the most appropriate methodological grounding for future research.
