Abstract

Local journalism represents the majority of journalism in many countries, yet is often overlooked in discussions of journalism and its future. This manuscript provides an overview over the similarities and differences in how contemporary changes in the media are affecting specifically local journalism in different high income democracies and summarize what these changes mean for how local journalism can contribute to (1) information provision and political accountability, (2) increasing civic engagement and political participation, and (3) enhancing community integration.
