Abstract
Book Review. In Against the Profit Motive: The Salary Revolution in American Government, 1780-1940 (2014), Nicholas R. Parrillo describes the manner in which the provision of government services shifted from fee-for-service to provision by salaried government officers. This transition took place more quickly in the United States than other countries. Parrillo’s work ably traces the economic, cultural, and practical forces that triggered these shifts within both the state and federal governments.
