Abstract

This paper studies the structure of certain measures of group deprivation in a multi-dimensional framework where, for each individual and each attribute under consideration, the only information that one uses is whether the individual is deprived in terms of that attribute. We first axiomatically characterize some measures of group deprivation, and then extend our analysis to a setting in which dimensions are grouped into a two-tier hierarchy.

Keywords: deprivation, multiple dimensions, binary data, basic and non-basic dimensions, additivity, anonymity, priority, deprivation-decreasing switch
