Abstract
It is known that optical amplifiers are deployed in optical networks in order to maintain the required level of system performance over longer transmission range. In this paper, performance comparison of different optical amplifiers and their combinations known as hybrid amplifiers were investigated in 16 channel Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM system. Combining the advantages of different amplifiers allows simultaneous high gain for wider bandwidth and the ability to provide gain at any wavelength. To compare the results, performance metrics such as Bit Error Rate (BER), quality factor, eye opening, gain and noise figure of the system were analyzed. It was observed that hybrid amplifiers provide better result for DWDM-based transmission systems.
