Abstract

The high number of breast cancer cases, in recent times, has caught the attention of many researchers and scholars. As a result, numerous research have been conducted to determine some of the impacts that diagnosis and treatment have on the affected women. Similarly, this study aimed to determine the experiences of young women following breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. To attain this aim, the researcher conducted a systematic review of literature, while taking two major objectives in mind:

1. To aggregate literature from different scholars on the impacts of breast cancer diagnosis or treatment on young women;

2. To analyse, critique, and interpret the literature in order to summarise some of the experience that young women undergo following breast cancer diagnosis/treatment.

Thematic analysis of data was used to consolidate the information from the review and facilitate a discussion. The results of the review showed that four major challenging issues face the majority of the women treated and diagnosed with breast cancer. Among these issues were image challenges, fertility and adoption, sexual functionality, and emotional distress.
