Abstract

This chapter prevents original archival research concerning the indicators produced by a prominent international organization, Freedom House. The chapter presents historical evidence on the social processes behind this organization and its indicator, and discusses ways that conditions of production influence the kinds of knowledge that indicators provide. The chapter also explores some normative implications of these findings.
