Abstract

English Abstract: A commentary on Thomas Schelling's notion of micromotives, recenly taken up by Malcolm Gladwell and Steven Pinker, tracing its intellectual background in other classical theories of the emergence of complexity. This arises from the contingent interaction of multiple and disperse causal relationships, giving rise to interactive feedback loops of regularity. Lucretius and Herbert Spencer are singled out as prime theorists of the doctrine of the emergence of order without a guiding intention, which might also be called 'unintelligent design'.
