Abstract

This article will provide an overview and accessible explanation of Joseph Raz’s influential theory of authority, guiding those coming to it for the first time as to its theoretical ambitions within the wider issues of authority and their intricacies. The following article will treat notable criticisms of the theory. Here I will proceed in two parts: first situating the theory among philosophical examinations of authority, then explaining the theory itself in detail.

Keywords: Joseph Raz, authority, political obligation
