Abstract

This paper reviews the historiography of the British coal industry from the early nineteenth century to the twenty-first. It was written to introduce the three economy volumes of the documentary collection edited by John Benson Coal in Victorian Britain (6 vols., Pickering and Chatto, London, 2011-12) but not published. It concludes that the historiography is unduly narrow and that a new history for new times is needed. Green, feminist and imperial historians especially are encouraged to look at the industry in a fresh light.
