Abstract

The article is an overview of the present EU law and the proposals for reform. Profile creation based on Internet data and the associated decisions based on such profiles pose dangers to users’ privacy. The article argues that the 1995 EU Data Protection Directive contains only a rudimentary regime. Proposals for reform are analysed, including the Commission’s Proposal for a General Data Protection Regulation.

Keywords: privacy, profiling, data protection, EU data protection law
