Abstract

Non-profit organizations are under growing pressure from key constituents to become internally sustainable. For many of those organizations this means a significant shift from being consumers of philanthropic gifts to becoming value creators capable of utilizing philanthropic gifts to develop and generate revenue streams leading to financial sustainability. Key questions emerging from this changing paradigm focus on the ability of existing organizational leadership teams to make this shift in thinking and action. specifically, to what extent can these teams think and act entrepreneurially? Can entrepreneurial thinking and skills be inculcated into these teams? To what extent must there be significant changes in team and organizational structures in order to motivate a greater level of entrepreneurial thinking and action. What business skills are required to ensure long-term financial sustainability as well as measurement of organizational impact?
