Abstract

Case study is a useful tool for academics/practicing engineers for analyzing real-world problems. The subject of this case study involves structural modeling and analyzing of the nozzle local loads of a spherical pressure vessel using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Spherical pressure vessels are used widely in industry for storage. A number of openings are provided on the shell for measurements, mountings, etc. This causes weakening of the vessel material strength. The connections to the nozzles attached to the vessel add to the local loads, increasing the risk of failure during commissioning and/or subsequent operation. Internationally, ASME codes are accepted as validating criterion for pressure vessel design. There is no defined methodology as per ASME code for pressure vessels having multiple openings. Hence, carrying out a Finite Element Model (FEM)/ FEA becomes imperative to confirm that the loads are within acceptable limits specified in the ASME code such that the integrity of pressure vessel would not be compromised. The top and bottom nozzle loads along with internal pressure will be modeled and analyzed. Validation of adopted meshing model is done. This case is a real-life study where the results are used to make a decision on the acceptance or rejection of a large pressure vessel.
