Abstract

This paper argues that a strict interpretation of voluntarism implies a move from a positivistic to a phenomenological perspective. After discussing the essential features of phenomenological sociology and defining its central question, the paper goes on to examine the work of Blumer and Garfinkel in terms of their utility for developing a phenomenological sociology.
