Abstract

Corruption in Nigeria has taken a dramatic turn in recent debates and commentaries. Certain practices and experiences explain the perception of judiciary as a limiting factor in the country’s development process. Lack of clarity in juridical stances on effective sanctions and sustainable deterrence for corruption is perceived as systemic incentive that undermines the country’s democratic experience. This paper examines the nature and implications of corruption in the judiciary in Nigeria. It evaluates the dialectics of judicial administration, state and development. The paper argues that if the judiciary, considered the beacon of a democratic process and good governance is tainted in corruption, the developmental objectives of the country will remain a mirage.
